What is Underfloor Heating Pipe?
Underfloor heating is widely used in northern Europe and has in recent years become quite popular in the UK, both for new builds and updating existing property. Pipes used for hot and cold water services, often referred to as 'Standard Pipes', are normally single layer extrusions. For central and underfloor heating/cooling applications and embedded coil technology applications it is essential to specify a 'Barrier Pipe'. Underfloor Heating Pipe is know in the trade as:
- Underfloor Heating Pipe
- Barrier Pipe
- Pex Pipe
All of our pipe is suitable for Underfloor Heating installations in both commercial and domestic applications regardless of the term utilised in the trade (UFH Pipe, Barrier Pipe & Pex Pipe). All three terms actually describe the same product.
Underfloor Heating Pipe
Such pipes need to incorporate an internal oxygen barrier. Oxygen barrier pipe is not required in potable water applications. There are numerous manufacturers of underfloor heating equipment producing various types and sizes of underfloor heating pipe.
Our Underfloor Heating Pipe is Cross-linked polyethylene, as a material for distributing hot water up to 95°C, has been used worldwide for almost 40 years and has become the best-proven and the most widely used plastic for commercial and domestic installations of underfloor heating.
Barrier Pipe
Barrier Pipe is utilised in Warm Water (Wet) Underfloor Heating systems under long life conditions for over 100 years. Barrier Pipes are manufactured to the highest standards to ensure optimum performance for Underfloor Heating applications. Water temperatures in excess of 90°C can be carried within a Barrier Pipe loop system which is managed by a distribution manifold system. We also supply Underfloor Heating manifolds.
Pex Pipe
PEX was developed in the 1960's. PEX tubing has been in use in many European countries for plumbing, underfloor heating and snow melt applications since that time. PEX was introduced in the United States in the 1980's, and has seen significant growth in market demand and production.
PEX/AL/PEX multilayer pipes use aluminium as the barrier. The aluminium is either layer welded or butt welded. Butt-welding improves their resistance to both internal pressure and to the stress generated when the pipes are bent during installation.
